As of May 26, 2025, India has reported a modest increase in COVID-19 cases, with 301 active transmissions primarily linked to new Omicron subvariants NB.1.8.1 and LF.7, both stemming from the JN.1 lineage. Health authorities are still determining whether this rise represents a new wave or a recurrence of previous infections. Globally, the pandemic-originating in Wuhan, China-continues to affect over 200 countries and remains classified as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern by international health organizations.
