Abstract

Schiff base condensation, the reaction of a primary amine with an aldehyde or a ketone to give an azomethine, is still one of the most heavily used preparative operations in coordination, medicinal and materials chemistry. Its appeal rests on a deceptively simple picture: two components, one new bond, water as the only by-product. In practice the way that bond is made varies enormously, and the choice between the procedures available is seldom argued on quantitative grounds. This review compares the classical reflux preparation of Schiff bases with the non-conventional routes that have largely displaced it, namely microwave irradiation, ultrasonic irradiation, mechanochemical grinding and milling, catalysis by natural acids, ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents, and aqueous or one-pot protocols. The imine route is then placed beside other strategies that deliver comparable targets: Mannich aminomethylation, diazotisation-coupling, reductive amination, and the copper-catalysedazide-alkyne cycloaddition. Reported times, isolated yields, catalyst demand and the few available green metrics are collected from primary reports and compared directly, along with the direct-versus-template question governing how the metal complexes are assembled. Three points recur. Energy-input methods compress reaction times by one to three orders of magnitude while usually raising yield by ten to twenty percentage points; on atom economy the condensation is matched only by the Mannich reaction and by catalytic reductive amination, and is far ahead of diazotisation-coupling and amide coupling; and the reversibility that makes the imine easy to form remains its practical weakness. A minimum reporting set is proposed to make future comparisons meaningful.
